Welcome to the HTML Workshop

Welcome to the MERLin HTML Workshop. This tutorial is designed to help students involved in MERLin understand the basic workings of the World Wide Web and how to create HTML documents. By the end of this tutorial, you should be able to create a personal home page for the MERLin web site using our home page template.

The workshop is divided into six sections. The first section provides an overview of how the World Wide Web functions. The second section provides basic information about HTML and how to create an HTML document. The third section explains some important advanced features of HTML. The fourth section is an overview of some of the features of HTML which can be used to design screen space. The last section describes the structure of documents on the MERLin web site and provides you with a template you can use to create your home page. The final section is a list of print and On-line Resources which you might find helpful as you continue your exploration of HTML authoring.

The description of the elements and features of HTML and the WWW provided in this tutorial are far from complete. In many cases key occurences of important terms link to a defintion of that term. These definitions are located at a site called The PC Webopedia (http://www.sandybay.com/pc-web/). This site is an encyclopedia which covers a whole range of subjects related to personal computers. The definitions found at this site link to other related terms within the Webopaedia or other important web sites, allowing you to expand your understanding of computer-related subjects.

In addition to the important terms linked to the Webopaedia, there are side-bars which point you directly to source documents or other relevant resources. You may also find it helpful to consult some of the books and resources listed in the last section of the workshop.
